If you're not the type who likes to just scratch the surface, this tour is for you, as you’ll be taken down to the magma chamber of a dormant volcano.
You’ll start with a hike across a moss-covered lava field to warm up to the volcanic landscape. The trail is rocky and uneven in places, but nothing too steep until the final ten minutes. That’s the most challenging part: a short climb of about 50 meters. After that, you’ll be standing at the top of Þríhnúkagígur, a dormant volcano that last erupted over 4,000 years ago.
From there, you’ll step into an open cable lift and descend 120 meters (400 feet) straight down into the crater. The tour includes a traditional Icelandic meat soup afterward (or a vegetarian option if you prefer), along with coffee and tea. You’ll definitely want something warm after being underground!

- Meeting point: BSÍ Bus Terminal, Reykjavík.
- Multiple daily departures: 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, and 16:00.
- The experience involves a 45–50 min hike (~3.5 km each way) to the crater, followed by a descent of 120 meters to the volcano bottom via open cable lift.

Important information
- Not suitable for people in limited physical shape.
- The temperature inside the crater is always ~3°C (37°F). Please dress warmly regardless of surface weather.
- Children 8+ are welcome. Bear in mind children must genuinely be able to hike 3.5 km each way in potentially bad weather. No refund will be issued if the child cannot complete the hike.
- Please bring sturdy hiking boots, warm and waterproof outdoor clothing, and a camera.
