Frequently asked questions - What to know before your Iceland trip

Your 365-day safety net. Always local, always íslenska.

Answers from years of helping travelers just like you plan their Iceland adventure.

1

What’s the story behind Travel to Iceland?

We’ve been on the ground in Iceland for over 8 years. We built a Facebook community for travelers helping travelers, and it grew to 106,000 people asking questions, sharing tips, and getting excited together.

When you kept asking where to find reliable rentals and tours, we decided to build a business around the answers. Today, we've helped many travelers explore Iceland, and we're still that same community at heart.

2

Is Travel to Iceland an officially licensed Icelandic travel agency?

Yes, we're a registered member of the Icelandic Tourist Board. That means we play by the rules, meet local standards, and operate right here in Iceland.
3

How do you choose your partners?

We only work with local Icelandic providers. Why? Well, they’re people who know these roads, these glaciers, and this ever-changing weather. From there, we look for a proven reputation, a solid and varied fleet, and service we’d trust for our own trips.

We want you to book with confidence, not cross your fingers. That’s why we do the homework so you get to enjoy the ferð (trip).

4

What's the difference between booking with you vs. booking direct?

Booking with us gives you options. We compare prices, highlight trusted local operators, and bundle perks you won't always find going solo. Plus, you get 365‑day multilingual support and the collective wisdom of 100,000+ travelers who've been there. Same local providers, just more peace of mind…and more discounts!
5

Am I booking with you or directly with the provider?

You book securely through our platform, but your rental or tour is delivered by a trusted local operator. We bring the options, discounts, and best prices together so you can compare with confidence. You? You simply need to bring your sense of adventure!
6

Will I receive a booking confirmation? From you or from the provider?

Já, yes! You'll receive a confirmation email and PDF from us with all the details you need. This includes the provider's information, office address or meeting point, payment details, and other essential information for your rental or tour.
7

Do I need to create an account to book?

Nei, no! You can book as a guest. Then, you can simply use your email and confirmation to access our dashboard and manage your reservation.
8

Can I book multiple services together? Car rental and a tour, for example?

You can find everything you need for Iceland on our website, but the booking process for cars, campers, and tours is done separately.
9

Is the price I see the final price, or will extra fees appear at checkout?

What you see is what you pay; that's our loforð (promise). The price includes VAT and all standard costs. If you add extras like insurance upgrades or additional drivers, those will show clearly at checkout. No surprises.
10

Why is the price here different from the provider's own website?

We work closely with our local partners to offer exclusive rates and promotions you won't always find booking direct. Same providers, same high-quality service…just a better deal on our end.
11

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) and PayPal. American Express works for online payments through us; just keep in mind that not every provider in Iceland accepts it at pickup.
12

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms depend on the specific rental or tour you choose. The good news? You'll see the policy clearly during booking, right before you commit, so you always know where you stand.
13

Can I change my booking dates after confirming?

Já! Yes. As long as availability allows, our team can help adjust your dates at no extra charge. Just keep in mind that if your new dates fall in a different season or extend the rental length, the final price may shift. We'll walk you through it.
14

What happens if the provider cancels? Do I get a refund or a replacement?

Cancellations are rare, but your peace of mind is our priority. If a provider can't deliver, we'll work to find a replacement right away. If we can’t find the perfect fit, you’ll receive a full refund.

Pro tip: to guarantee your first-choice gear and the most stable rates, we always recommend booking as far in advance as possible.

15

Who do I contact if something goes wrong during my trip?

For immediate logistics like a flat tire or a tour pickup, your local provider is the fastest point of contact.

But you’re never alone... Our customer team is available to help you find the right solution or connect you with the right person. You booked with us, and we’ll help you from booking to boarding. Takk for trusting us!

16

Do you offer year-long support? In what languages?

Yes, we're here for you every day of the year from 6:00 to midnight, Icelandic time.

Our support team speaks multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Polish. We'll make sure you're understood and taken care of, no matter where you're from.

17

Can I get recommendations or itinerary help from your team?

We love talking about Iceland. Ask us about tours, routes, or where to find the best kleina; we’re pleased to share!

While we don’t offer custom itinerary planning or personal travel design, we are here to help you feel confident and point you in the right direction.

1

Can rental cars in Iceland become fully booked?

Já, yes! And it happens faster than you might think. During peak season (June, July, and August), cars sell out even months in advance.

We work with multiple providers to give you as many options as possible, but even then, availability gets tight. So, if you’re traveling to Iceland in the summer, we always recommend booking as early as you can.

2

When do I need to reserve the car by?

As a general rule, the earlier, the better. For summer travel (June through August), we recommend booking at least 6 months in advance. That's when you'll find the best availability and the most competitive prices.

If you're planning to visit during the peakest of peak months (think July or early August), give yourself even a little more breathing room. Popular vehicles and 4x4s tend to go first.

3

What car is best for my planned route? Can you recommend one?

Are you sticking to the Ring Road or exploring Reykjavík and nearby sights? A standard 2WD vehicle will serve you just fine. It's comfortable, fuel-efficient, and perfect for paved roads and well-maintained gravel routes.

Planning to drive any F-roads or head into the Highlands? Then a 4x4 is mandatory…no exceptions. Those fjallavegir or mountain roads require the clearance and power that only a 4x4 can provide.

Traveling during winter (October through April)? We strongly recommend a 4x4 regardless of your route. The extra traction makes a real difference on snow and ice, even on main roads.

If you have questions about a specific itinerary, just reach out. We'll give you honest advice based on roads we've driven ourselves.

4

Do you have a one-way system?

Yes, many of our trusted providers do offer one-way rentals.

The most common setup is between Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport (and vice versa). That means you can pick up your bílaleiga (car rental) at the airport and drop it off in the city, or the other way around. It's a handy option if you're starting or ending your trip in a different place than where you landed.

5

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Iceland?

Most providers require you to be at least 20 years old to rent a standard car. For larger SUVs or more powerful vehicles, the minimum age is usually 23.

That said, each provider sets their own age limit. Some may have slightly different rules, especially for younger drivers or premium models. You'll always see the specific requirements clearly during the booking process, before you commit.

6

What documents do I need to pick up the car?

To pick up your bílaleiga (car rental), you’ll need three things:

  • A valid ID or passport, so the providers know it's actually you.
  • An original driver’s license that has been held for at least 12 months. No photos, no paper or electronic copies, please!
  • A valid credit card in the name of the main driver.

If your driver’s license is not in the Latin alphabet (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, or Russian) and lacks an English translation, you must present an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original license.

7

Where do I pick up and drop off the car?

Most of our trusted providers have pickup and drop-off locations in two key spots:

  • Near Keflavík Airport (KEF): perfect for grabbing your bíll right after you land or dropping it off just before you fly home.
  • Downtown Reykjavík: ideal if you're spending a few days in the city first or if you want to return the car and then explore the capital on foot.

We'll always show the exact address and hours during booking, so you know exactly where to go.

8

What happens if my flight is delayed and I miss my pickup time?

Most providers allow a couple of hours of leeway if your flight is delayed. They know Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, and so can travel schedules.

That said, if you believe you’ll be delayed significantly, please contact the provider directly or let us know as soon as possible. We'll help make sure your bókun (reservation) stays active and doesn't get canceled.

9

Is there an additional driver fee, and what are the requirements?

Já, yes. Most providers charge a small extra fee for an additional driver. Why? Because that driver also needs to be covered by the insurance, and that comes with a cost. You’ll see the exact price during the booking process.

As for requirements, they're exactly the same as for the main driver:

  • Valid ID or passport
  • Original driver's license (held for at least 12 months)
  • Meet the minimum age rules (usually 20, or 23 for larger vehicles)
10

Can I take the car on F-roads or into the highlands?

Only if you have a suitable 4x4. Regular cars are not allowed on F-roads, and for good reason, as those fjallavegir (mountain roads) demand power, clearance, and a bit of courage. In our search process, you'll find an F-roads filter. Just tick that box, and we'll show you only those providers and vehicles that are officially permitted to take on the highlands.
11

Are winter tires included?

Já, yes! In Iceland, winter tires are mandatory from November 1st to April 14th. During that period, all of our trusted providers will have them on their vehicles once the authorities give the green light. Oh! And you don't need to ask, and you don't need to pay extra!
12

Can I add extra equipment like GPS, child seats, or a roof rack?

Yes, of course! At Travel to Iceland, we work with providers who want to make your trip as comfortable as possible. That means offering the extras that turn a good rental into a great one.

You'll see exactly what extras are available for each vehicle during the booking process, along with their prices.

13

Can I take the car on a ferry (e.g., to the Westfjords or Grimsey)?

Yes, most providers allow it. Taking your bílaleiga (car rental) on a ferry can be a wonderful way to explore more remote corners of Iceland, like the Westfjords or the island of Grímsey.

Now, while your rental provider may say yes, the ferry company has its own rules. You'll need to check with them directly to make sure your specific vehicle is suitable for the crossing. Some ferries have size restrictions, weight limits, or other conditions you'll want to know ahead of time.

14

What insurance is included, and what additional coverage should I consider?

CDW (collision damage waiver) and PAI (personal accident insurance) come included in every rental. Additional coverage is indeed available depending on the vehicle and provider you select.

Whenever possible, opt for complete, zero-deductible options. That way, your ferð (journey) is nothing but a stress-free adventure.

15

Is there a deposit? How much is it, and how long is it held?

Usually, there is. The deposit amount depends on two things: the provider and the insurance level you choose. In some cases, if you opt for a zero-deductible insurance package, the provider may waive the deposit entirely.

Every provider handles deposits differently. So before you book, take a moment to check their specific terms and conditions. We show them clearly during the booking process, right there on the vehicle page.

The deposit is held for the entire rental period, so once you return the vehicle and everything checks out, the deposit is released back to you.

16

Do you offer roadside assistance?

Yes, every rental comes with access to a roadside assistance line. With Travel to Iceland, you're never completely on your own out there!

That said, it is important to note that providers may charge a fee if you need a tow, a battery jump, or a lockout service. If you want peace of mind with no surprise costs, look for providers that offer full roadside assistance coverage as an extra add-on should you wish to have all of those possible costs covered.

17

Who is responsible for traffic fines, tolls, or parking tickets?

The renter is fully responsible. So, if you get a ticket or run through a toll, know it is on you.

In most cases, the provider will charge the fine and an admin fee directly to the credit card you used for the rental. If a deposit was held, it may be deducted from there.

18

Is unlimited mileage included, or is there a daily limit?

Yes! Unlimited mileage is included with every rental. No daily limits, no surprise fees per mile.

Drive the Ring Road, chase the northern lights, or take that detour to a hidden waterfall you always wanted. However many miles your adventure needs, with Travel to Iceland, you're covered.

19

What is the fuel policy?

Most providers operate on a 'same-to-same' policy. If you pick up the car with a full tank, simply return it full. If it was half-full at pickup, just return it at the same level. It’s simple, transparent, and fair!
20

What happens if I return the car earlier or later than scheduled?

Returning earlier is okay! But know that most providers won’t refund for unused days.

Returning late? This is where it gets trickier. Most providers offer a short grace period, especially during rough weather or road conditions. But if you miss your agreed drop-off day and time without warning, you'll typically be charged for an extra rental day.

1

What is the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?

Size and comfort, mostly.

A campervan is built on a standard van chassis, so it is more compact, easy to park, and good on narrow roads. The bed usually folds out from the seating area, which works perfectly well for people who don't mind a little coziness.

On the other hand, a motorhome is larger, so you get a proper separate sleeping area, a real kitchen, and usually a bathroom. It's a better fit for families or anyone who wants a bit more breathing room.

Both will get you around Iceland just fine. It really comes down to how much space matters to you.

2

Are motorhomes significantly harder to drive than campervans?

Not really. They're longer, of course, so you'll need to think a bit more when parking or reversing. But the actual driving is quite straightforward. Most people find their rhythm within the first hour.
3

Do you offer both manual and automatic transmissions?

We do. Most of our providers offer both manual and automatic campers and motorhomes. From our experience, automatic vehicles tend to book up faster, especially during peak season. So if that's what you need, don't wait too long to reserve.
4

Can I request a specific model or brand?

You can, of course, let us know your preference, and we’ll pass it on to the provider, but, unfortunately, specific models or brands cannot be guaranteed, as this highly depends on availability. What we can guarantee is that every vehicle meets our quality standards.
5

What is the minimum age required to rent a vehicle?

It depends on the vehicle type:

  • Campervans and rooftop tents: 20 to 23 years old
  • Motorhomes: typically 25

Some providers may have slightly different rules, especially for younger drivers or larger vehicles. You'll see the exact age requirement clearly on each vehicle page during the booking process.

6

Do I need a special driver's license to drive an RV in Iceland?

No, you don't. The equivalent of a standard European Category B license covers everything in our fleet. All motorhomes available through our website stay within the 3,500 kg limit that a regular license allows.
7

Can campervans and motorhomes be driven on F-roads?

Only if the vehicle is a 4x4 model that the provider has specifically authorized for F-road use. Not all campervans qualify, and taking an unauthorized vehicle onto an F-road voids your insurance entirely.

Use the F-roads filter when searching through our site, and you'll only see vehicles that are cleared for the Highlands. That's the safest way to make sure you're picking the right one.

8

Can I take a motorhome into the Highlands?

Yes, as long as the motorhome is an authorized 4x4 model, you can take it to the Highlands of Iceland.
9

How do these vehicles handle strong winds, and are there official wind warnings I should follow?

Larger motorhomes catch more wind than cars. That said, if you drive carefully and use common sense, you'll be fine.

Iceland does have official wind warnings. If the forecast shows wind stronger than 15 m/s (about 54 km/h), you really shouldn't be driving. Not just for comfort but for safety. Check vedur.is before you head out each day. If the wind is high, wait it out. A delayed drive is always better than a dangerous one.

10

Can I rent a motorhome during the Icelandic winter?

Já! Many providers offer RVs that can be rented during winter. However, some motorhomes have exterior water pipes that can freeze overnight when temperatures drop below zero. That means no water until things warm up in the morning.
11

Are the campers equipped for winter travel, and how is the heating managed?

Most camper models come with proper heating. They’ll either have a Webasto-style heater that runs on fuel or a system that works with a campsite electrical hookup. Some providers also include sleeping bags rated for low temperatures.
12

Are rooftop tents warm enough for cold nights?

They're warmer than most people expect. The thick, windproof, waterproof pop-up material does a good job keeping the chill out. That said, a rooftop tent is not a heated space. You're sleeping in a tent, not an RV. For serious winter temperatures, a camper or motorhome with an onboard heater is the better call.
13

Are campsites open year-round or only during the summer season?

Iceland does have campsites that stay open all year, but they’re fewer than their summer counterparts. You’ll then have options, just not as many. If you’re traveling in winter, do check which campsites are open along your route.
14

Can I camp anywhere in Iceland, or must I stay at designated campsites?

You must camp in designated campsites. Since 2015, Icelandic law no longer allows sleeping outside of permitted areas. That means no parking your campervan by a random waterfall and calling it home.

The rules exist to protect Iceland's fragile nature and, of course, to keep you safe. Stick to official campsites. They're not hard to find, and they usually have the facilities you need anyway.

15

Is the Iceland Camping Card included in the rental, or do I pay per night?

Unfortunately, the Camping Card is not included with any rental. You can, of course, buy it separately on their official website if you want it. Whether it's worth buying depends on your trip length, so make sure you do the maths before you buy.

16

How and where can I empty the greywater and waste tanks in Iceland?

Greywater and waste tanks must be emptied at designated locations only. Never in the wild or in nature.

Your best bets are:

  • Campsites: most have dedicated tæmingarstöð (drainage stations)
  • Service stations: major fuel chains like Olís and N1 offer waste disposal at many locations
  • Specialized dump stations: found along popular routes

Plan your route with emptying in mind. Don't wait until your tanks are full to start looking. A little foresight keeps Iceland beautiful for everyone!

17

Is there a formal orientation or handover briefing at pickup?

Já, yes! Our providers will gladly walk you through your vehicle before you drive off. They'll show you how things work: heating, water, waste tanks, hookups, and anything else you might need to know. It's your chance to ask questions before you hit the road.
18

What do I need to check before returning my rental?

Before you head to the drop-off, run through this quick list:

  • Trash removed.
  • Dishes washed.
  • Reasonably clean inside.
  • Grey and black water tank emptied.
19

Does the vehicle need to be cleaned before it is returned?

A full professional clean is included in your rental, so you don't need to scrub every corner. A quick wipe-down with water if it's muddy, dishes done, rubbish out.

If the camper is returned very dirty, think caked on mud, food stains, or sand everywhere, providers may charge an extra cleaning fee.

1

How and when will I receive my booking vouchers?

Once you book through our platform, you will receive a booking confirmation email with all of your details, and of course, your voucher. Please remember to check your spam folder as well.
2

Are there any hidden booking fees, or is the price final?

The price you see on the tour page is the final price for the tour and everything that’s included. No further booking fees or surprises at checkout.
3

What is your cancellation policy?

For most of the tours we offer on our website, you need to cancel with +24h for a full refund, but this may vary depending on the specific tour. Some may have longer windows. Please check the terms and conditions on each tour before placing a reservation.
4

Can I book a private tour for my group?

Já, absolutely! Many of our providers offer private tour options for those who wish to have a more personal experience. Feel free to contact us with the tour you have in mind, and we will try to find the most suitable option for you.
5

Does ‘pickup time’ mean an exact time or a 30-minute window?

In this case, pickup time means the exact time your tour is scheduled to start. We therefore recommend showing up 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Some tours may require you to be at the meeting point earlier, so make sure to read the conditions before placing a reservation.
6

Do tours offer free pickup from campsites or hostels?

Some tours do, but not all of them. Other tours may require you to meet at a specific location, like a bus or an office. We clearly show these details on each tour page, so make sure to check it before you book.
7

What happens if my tour is cancelled due to bad weather?

If the provider cancels the trip due to weather conditions, you can either rebook the tour for the next day or receive a full refund.
8

Is there a difficulty rating for these activities?

Já, there is! On each tour card of our tour page, you’ll find a difficulty rating from easy to difficult. This way, you know exactly whether the activity is suitable for your comfort level and physical ability.
9

Are there age or height restrictions for children?

Yes, though this depends on the tour, as some activities are directly not suitable for children. Please read the tour information carefully before booking. If you’re still unsure, please feel free to contact us at info@traveltoiceland.com.

10

Do I need a license for the Silfra snorkeling tour?

No, you don’t. This specific tour doesn’t require any previous diving experience, so you’re more than welcome to join in!
11

Are your guides professionally certified?

Já, they are. Our partner companies and guides are duly certified by the Icelandic Tourism Board and hold the proper authorization required by Icelandic law.
12

Is specialized clothing provided, or do I need my own?

Most tours, like glacier hiking or snorkeling, do include specialized gear such as helmets or dry suits. However, you will still need to wear proper clothing underneath, such as waterproof gear and sturdy shoes.

This will be specific in the tour description, so make sure to read it before booking.

13

Are meals and drinks included, or should I bring my own supplies?

Meals are usually not included on day tours. A few longer or specialized tours may include a snack or light meal, but that's the exception, not the rule, and therefore it will be specified in the tour description.
14

Does the tour price include any insurance?

Yes, tour operators in Iceland are required by law to have basic third-party liability insurance. So if something goes wrong on their end, you're covered for the essentials.

That said, third-party liability is not personal travel insurance, so this won’t help with lost luggage, sickness, or last-minute cancellations.

15

What are your top 3 most popular tours?

Here’s what travelers are loving right now, by season:

Summer:

  • Reykjavík Classic Whale Watching: because who doesn’t love whales? And since it is close to Reykjavik, it’s magical and easy to fit into any trip.
  • Húsavík Original Whale Watching: Húsavík is known as Iceland's whale-watching capital for a reason. Here, sightings are almost guaranteed.
  • Grindavík, Krýsuvík & Eruption Site Half-Day Tour: Volcanoes, geothermal areas…Iceland in a nutshell!

Winter:

  • Northern Lights Small Group Tour (with hot chocolate, kleina, and photos): A great option to share a magical moment just with your loved ones!
  • Northern Lights Super Jeep: Perfect for nights when the lights are hiding behind bad weather.
  • Grindavík, Krýsuvík & Eruption Site Half-Day Tour: Já, yes… it's on both lists. Volcanic landscapes don't take a season off.
