Here’s everything you may want to know

1

What counts as a luxury car rental in Iceland?

In Iceland, luxury car rental is less about speed and more about comfort, quality, and having the right vehicle for the island.

Here, the luxury label usually gives you a more refined ride, newer model years, better interiors, smoother driving, and extra driver-assistance tech. Many luxury SUVs also come with AWD or 4x4, which matters much more in Iceland than horsepower. And on an island with this many horses, that says a lot.

2

Is it worth renting a luxury car in Iceland?

Yes, renting a luxury car in Iceland can be worth it if you’re planning long driving days or simply want a more comfortable ride.

A luxury rental really earns its stripes when you care about:

  • Comfort: Better seats, a quieter cabin, and smoother suspension feel much þægilegri when Iceland decides your “quick drive” is actually several hours.
  • Safety and tech: High-end SUVs often come with stronger headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and other features that help when the weather changes its mind. Again.
  • Performance: More powerful engines and AWD or 4x4 systems can feel reassuring in wind, rain, snow or on those long rural stretches where sheep are basically the local traffic.

Simple rule of thumb? If you’re driving a lot, traveling between October and April, and comfort matters more than budget, a luxury 4x4 SUV can be worth it. In summer, a premium sedan can be enough for paved routes.

3

Can I drive a luxury car on Iceland’s F-roads?

Only if it’s a 4x4 luxury SUV approved for F-roads by the rental provider. A luxury badge doesn’t count, and Iceland won’t be impressed by leather seats on a Highland track.

F-roads are rough mountain roads with gravel, rocks, steep sections, and sometimes river crossings. So, simple rule: Luxury sedan? Nei takk (No, thanks). Luxury 4x4 SUV approved for F-roads? Maybe, depending on the route.

Always check the rental terms before heading into the Highlands. Driving the wrong vehicle can void your insurance, and river-crossing damage usually isn’t covered. Suddenly, that “premium experience” gets expensive fast.

4

What insurance should I get for a luxury car rental in Iceland?

For a luxury car rental in Iceland, it’s usually worth looking beyond the entry-level cover. Premium vehicles can mean higher repair costs, and Iceland can throw in a few little gifts from above, from fast-changing weather to the odd gravel surprise. Nothing dramatic. Just worth covering properly.

At Travel to Iceland, coverage is organized into three simple levels:

  • Basic: Covers the essentials, usually CDW and TPL. Some providers also include SCDW to lower the excess if the vehicle is damaged. Good for simple paved routes, but a bit light for winter, long trips, or 4x4 driving.
  • Plus: A stronger middle option. It usually includes SCDW, and many providers add GP for gravel damage and TP for theft-related incidents. A smart choice if your route includes gravel roads, longer distances, or unpredictable weather.
  • Full Cover: The most complete option. It includes zero-deductible protection, so your out-of-pocket risk stays as low as possible. For luxury SUVs, Ring Road trips, winter travel, or mixed road conditions, this is the easiest way to keep the trip feeling premium.

Coverage details can vary by provider and vehicle, but at Travel to Iceland, everything is shown clearly during the booking process.

5

What do I need to rent a luxury car in Iceland?

You’ll usually need to meet a few extra requirements. Nothing too complicated, just the usual “please prove you can handle this nice vehicle” moment.

Most providers ask for:

  • Minimum age: Luxury cars and larger SUVs often require drivers to be 23 or 25, depending on the vehicle.
  • Valid driver’s license: You’ll need a license you’ve held for at least 12 consecutive months.
  • International Driving Permit: Only needed if your license is not written in the Latin alphabet.
  • Payment card: You can pay online with major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard, as well as PayPal, and the card should be in the main driver’s name for payment and security purposes.

Your guide to renting smarter

Your luxury car rental need-to-knows for Iceland

Match your luxury car to your Iceland itinerary

A quick look at Iceland’s main routes to help you choose.

Luxury in Iceland depends on the road ahead. Smooth summer drives? A sleek sedan can do the job. Gravel, winter weather, or too much luggage? That’s when an SUV starts making eyes at you.

Reykjavík, Golden Circle & South Coast

These are some of the best routes for a luxury car in Iceland because they’re scenic, mostly paved, and easy to enjoy without needing a rugged 4x4 setup. Think Reykjavík city drives, the Golden Circle, Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, and Vík if you’re heading along the South Coast.

A premium sedan or electric model can work beautifully here in good summer conditions, especially if you want smooth driving, a polished interior, and a little extra stíll between waterfall stops. Basically, the road behaves, the views show off, and your luxury car gets to do what it does best.

Ring Road

Route 1 is about 1,332 km, so better seats, a quieter cabin, smooth handling, and driver-assistance features can take the edge off those long driving days.

That said, the type of luxury car matters. A luxury sedan can work well from June to August if the weather is good and you’re not planning rough detours. But for more flexibility, a luxury SUV is usually the smarter choice, especially if you want extra space, better visibility, and more confidence in wind, rain, or mixed road conditions.

For shoulder seasons or winter, comfort alone isn’t enough. You’ll want a 4x4 or AWD SUV with good clearance, winter-ready features, and the right insurance. Iceland’s Ring Road may be mostly paved, but the weather still likes to keep its creative reputation alive.

Westfjords, Gravel & Scenic Detours

The Westfjords and scenic side roads are better suited to a luxury SUV than a low sedan. With longer distances, fewer services, and more remote landscapes, capability quickly becomes part of the luxury.

For routes like Ísafjörður, Dynjandi, Látrabjarg, or longer detours away from Route 1, a premium SUV gives you space for jackets, snacks, camera gear, and all those “wait, stop here” moments Iceland keeps throwing at you. Trust us, there are plenty of those.

Highlands & F-Roads

The Highlands are where luxury takes a back seat and capability gets the keys. This isn’t the place to pick a car just because it looks sleek, feels premium, or has a spaceship-level dashboard.

For places like Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Kerlingarfjöll, or Askja, start with the route, then choose the vehicle. Some Highland roads may work with a well-equipped luxury 4x4 SUV. Others are better left to tougher, more rugged options.

Whatever you end up driving, keep the not-so-luxury essentials handy: offline maps, a safety kit, emergency contacts, and a final check of official road updates before heading out.

Smart tips to keep your car, plan, and budget in good shape

Luxury costs enough. Don’t let mistakes add more.

A luxury rental already sits at the premium end, so the goal isn’t just to drive in style. It’s also to avoid silly extra costs. In Iceland, a bit of planning goes a long way:

  • Book early: Luxury cars and premium SUVs sell out faster, especially in summer. Booking ahead means better choice, better prices, and fewer “well, this is what’s left” moments.
  • Know the basics: Keep headlights on, wear seat belts, and follow speed limits. That means 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on gravel, and 90 km/h on paved rural roads.
  • Stay on marked roads: Off-road driving is illegal in Iceland and can lead to fines, damage, and insurance issues. Luxury doesn’t get a free pass.
  • Respect the wind: Park nose into the wind when possible and hold doors carefully. One strong gust can turn a car door into an expensive souvenir.
  • Check before you go: Look at official road and weather updates before longer drives. A quick check can save your route, your schedule, and your budget.
