Words can get carried away by the wind, especially in Iceland. So take it from travelers who rented with us and came back all smiles.
We had all the information we needed before picking up the electric car, especially about charging and range. That made the whole thing feel much less intimidating than we expected for a first Iceland road trip.
Charging became part of the trip in a nice way. We’d plug in, grab coffee, check the next stop, and keep going. The car was quiet, easy to drive, and the included extras made the rental feel very well thought out.
Our electric rental made the trip feel a little more relaxed and modern. No fuel stops, no noisy engine, and no guessing around the practical stuff.
Travel to Iceland gave us the confidence to try an electric rental in Iceland. The information about charging and driving range was clear from the start, and the car ended up being one of the easiest parts of the trip.
The charging stops ended up working in our favor. Instead of rushing from one place to the next, we used those minutes to grab something warm, check the route, and actually enjoy a slower pace.

Is it worth renting an electric car in Iceland?
Já, renting an electric car in Iceland can be worth it, especially if you’re driving classic routes like Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, the South Coast, or the Ring Road. EV rentals are quiet, smooth, automatic, and very comfortable for scenic road trips.
However, they work best if you’re happy to plan charging stops into your route instead of treating them as an emergency. So make sure your patience battery is fully charged too.
Can I take an electric car on Iceland’s F-roads?
Usually, no. Standard electric rentals are best for paved roads and main routes, not Highland F-roads. The Highlands require suitable 4x4 vehicles, and charging infrastructure there is very limited. This is Iceland’s version of remote, and it doesn’t do things halfway.
Where can I charge an electric car in Iceland?
You can charge electric cars in Reykjavík, nearby towns, along the Ring Road, on the South Coast, and near many popular stops.
Before you go, download the main charging apps and check Iceland’s EV charging map along your itinerary. A little planning here means fewer nervous battery checks later.
How long does it take to charge an electric car in Iceland?
It depends on the charger. DC fast chargers can often charge most EVs to around 80% in about 25 to 40 minutes, while AC chargers are slower and better for overnight stops at hotels, guesthouses, or campsites.
Simple rule? Fast chargers are for road days. Slow chargers are for sleeping, eating, or pretending you planned that long kaffi break all along. Though, if the stop takes 4 to 8 hours, your caffeine levels may need a different survival plan.
How do I pay for EV charging in Iceland?
Here in Iceland, many public chargers are activated and paid for through apps, not by tapping your card directly at the station. Networks like ON and Ísorka are widely used, and some apps let you add a credit card once your account is ready.
Set everything up before you hit the road: download the apps, save your payment details, and check with your rental provider which charging networks suit your car best. Less guessing, smoother charging.
Are electric cars good for winter in Iceland?
Yes, electric cars can work in winter in Iceland, but they need more planning than in summer. Cold weather, wind, heating use, and icy roads can reduce range, so it’s smart to charge more often and keep a bigger battery buffer.
For example, if you’re driving the Ring Road, North Iceland, or East Iceland, build charging stops into each day and avoid arriving at chargers with a nearly empty battery. A good habit is to charge during natural stops: lunch, sightseeing, grocery runs, or hotel check-in. Iceland gives you plenty of views. Use a few of them wisely.

Your electric car rental need-to-knows for Iceland
Renting an electric car in Iceland: bright idea or battery drama?
The ups, the downs, and the charging stops in between.
Before you choose an electric rental, it’s worth looking at both sides. EVs can make your Iceland trip smoother, quieter, and cleaner, but they also ask for a little more planning.
EV benefits
An electric car can make Iceland feel even calmer. No engine noise, no gear changes, just smooth driving and a landscape that keeps asking you to pull over.
- Lower emissions: Zero tailpipe emissions make them a cleaner choice on the road.
- Automatic driving: Simple, relaxed, and especially useful if you’re not used to manual cars.
- Fewer fuel stops: No petrol stations needed, just planned charging stops along the way.
- Modern feel: Instant acceleration and smart features make the whole trip feel a little more polished.
EV drawbacks
EVs come with a few things to keep in mind, and most of them are about planning ahead. Nothing complicated, just a little preparation to keep your route, charging stops, and battery levels working together.
- Range can change: Cold weather, wind, hills, heating use, and driving speed can reduce battery life.
- Charging takes time: Fast chargers are useful, but slower chargers can turn a quick stop into a longer pause.
- Routes need planning: It’s better to build charging stops into each day instead of waiting until the battery is low.
- Remote areas are trickier: Charging is easier on popular routes than in the Highlands or more isolated regions.
- Rental cost can be higher: EVs may cost more than standard gasoline cars, so weigh the comfort and quiet drive against the extra planning.
If that sounds manageable, an electric car can be a very smooth way to explore Iceland. If it sounds annoying, a gasoline or hybrid rental may suit your trip better. Luckily, Travel to Iceland has all those options ready for you.
What to check before your first charge
No guessing at the charger. Just plug in and keep going.
Charging an electric rental car in Iceland is usually simple, but a quick setup before you leave makes all the difference. Know your cable, your apps, and your charger options before the first stop.
For regular public AC charging, you’ll usually need a Type 2 cable. For a faster top-up, go for DC fast chargers or compatible Tesla Superchargers. Not exactly the glamorous part of the trip, but definitely the part you’ll be glad you understood.
Before hitting the road, get clear on:
- Charging cable: Make sure the right cable is included and stored in the car.
- Plug type: Ask which connector your EV uses, because “let’s try this one” is not a charging strategy.
- Charging apps: Download the apps you’ll need and add your payment method before the first stop.
- Return battery level: Check whether the car needs to come back with a specific charge.
- How charging works: Ask how to start, stop, and unplug a charging session.
Handle the boring bit at pickup, then let Iceland do the exciting part. Vá, basically.
