Who is coming to Iceland?
Seats and boot space are the first things that rule a car out.
When are you traveling?
The answer that changes every other answer. Winter roads in Iceland ask for winter tyres, and often for 4x4.
Where are you driving?
The road picks the vehicle. F-roads are 4x4 only — that is the law, not a recommendation.
Four trips that work, pick the one that sounds like yours
How long are you on the road?
Drag to your trip length. The longer the trip, the more the boot space matters.
What are you happy to spend per day?
Based on the average base rate published by each supplier, checked in October 2026. Insurance and extras are separate.
Which car do you picture yourself driving?
Same island, four very different drives. Pick the one you would rather sit in — if your route disagrees, we will say so.
Anything you cannot do without?
Optional. Tick what matters and drag it into order — the top of your list carries the most weight.
Tick what you need, then drag to put the most important on top.

Seats, luggage, transmission and fuel come from each company's own listing, checked in October 2026 — confirm the exact spec on the vehicle page before booking. Prices are the lowest daily rate each company publishes for the vehicle, without insurance or extras.

Insurance always sounds good at the counter. But when you actually need it, the details matter. We break down what each policy covers and what you still pay out of pocket. Ekkert leyndarmál, no secrets.
It covers the two things that matter most: damage to the car if you're in an accident, and any damage or injury to others. You’re only responsible for the initial excess.
Shrinks your deductible while covering gravel chips and sandstorms (provider dependent). Basic leaves both out entirely.
Includes Basic and Plus, but drops your excess to zero with most providers. No unexpected bills, no math required if something goes wrong.
Some standard policies don't cover flat tires or windshield cracks. Since gravel roads make tire issues common, this closes the gap.
Insurance fixes the damage. Roadside assistance gets help to you when you are stuck. Flat tire, dead battery, keys locked inside. That is where assistance comes in.
Keep this in mind for the Highlands: no policy in Iceland covers flooded engines. Cross a river, and you assume full liability for the vehicle.
Summertime indicators for a 2WD drive vehicle. Always review the terms of your vehicle, as deductible and daily rates differ depending on the provider.
The right car is not about what looks good. It is about what fits.
The sweet spot for city driving, the Golden Circle and South Coast on paved roads. Easy to park, cheap to run, unlimited mileage included.
See 2WD cars
For Highland routes, F-roads, or winter driving. More clearance and traction when conditions turn.
See 4x4 cars
Lower fuel cost and a quieter ride on paved routes. Best for shorter loops where charging stops fit naturally into your plan.
See electric cars
Most seats and luggage space in one vehicle. Best for families or groups who want to travel together without splitting into two cars.

| CAR TYPE | SEATS | INSURANCE | KEY PERKS | PRICE | BEST SEASON | BEST FOR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| | 4 | Basic (CDW) | Small, nimble, and easy on fuel. | $ | May – Sep | Perfect for couples exploring the Golden Circle. |
| | 4 | Basic (CDW) | Tough, capable, and ready for gravel. | $$ | All year | A great fit for adventurers heading into the Highlands. |
| | 4 | Basic (CDW) | Refined, responsive, and comfortable. | $$$ | All year | Travelers who want more power and luxury. |
There isn't a single "best" car rental really; it depends on your route, your budget, and how much support you want if something goes wrong. A company with the lowest daily rate isn't automatically the best deal once insurance, extras, and deposits are factored in.
Here you have some general recommendations:
Where you pick up the car depends on how your trip starts, not just where you land.
If you are heading straight out from Keflavík with no stop in the city first, a desk or shuttle at the airport saves you time and effort. You land, you grab the car, and you go.
If your route includes gravel, skip Basic and go for Plus or Full Cover. Likewise, deductible and coverage vary depending on the selected model and provider. Please ensure you check the terms and conditions before booking.
A compact Hyundai i10 for a week in the shoulder season with Plus insurance will set you back about USD 418 in total.
If you go for a larger 4x4 like a Dacia Duster for the same 7 days with Full Cover, you are looking at around USD 594.
The daily rate is only part of the picture. The real total includes insurance, with Basic usually included, but Gravel Protection, Sand & Ash Protection, and a lower deductible are often separate. There is also a security deposit hold on your card and any extras like GPS or a child seat if they are not already included.
A cheap daily rate can end up costing more once you add everything else. A slightly higher rate with more included is often better value. Always compare the full trip total, not just the per-day number.
Basic roadside assistance comes with most rentals. It covers getting help to you if you break down, get a flat tire, or lock yourself out. But the cost of the actual tow or the callout might not be included unless you have added a waiver.
For accidents, your insurance tier makes a difference. Basic leaves you with the deductible. Plus lowers it. Full Cover brings it to zero. It is worth checking before you book, especially if you are heading to remote areas like the Westfjords, where a breakdown means a longer wait no matter what.
