Who is coming to Iceland?
How many people have to sleep in there is the first thing that rules campers out.
When are you traveling?
The answer that changes every other answer. A rooftop tent in February is not a saving, it is a bad night.
Where are you driving?
The road picks the vehicle. F-roads are 4x4 only — that is the law, not a recommendation.
Four trips that work, pick the one that sounds like yours
How long are you on the road?
Drag to your trip length. Longer trips change the maths — a cheap van you are sick of by day three was never cheap.
What are you happy to spend per day?
Based on the average base rate published by each supplier, checked in October 2026. Insurance and extras are separate.
Which one do you picture yourself in?
Same island, four very different nights. Pick the one you would rather wake up in — if your route disagrees, we will say so.
Anything you cannot do without?
Optional. Tick what matters and drag it into order — the top of your list carries the most weight.
Tick what you need, then drag to put the most important on top.

Sleeping capacity, heating and on-board facilities are our own classification by vehicle class, checked in October 2026 — every company fits its fleet differently, so confirm the exact spec on the vehicle page before booking. Prices are the lowest daily rate each company publishes for the vehicle, without insurance or extras.

This is not a popularity contest or a commission-driven list. We compare companies the way we would choose one for ourselves. Because that is what we would want if we were planning our own trip.
Fleet quality and choice
From vehicle age and condition to layout sizes. Availability of automatics and 4x4s: We check the campers in person, not just through online photos.

Price and transparency
We keep it consistent. Same rental period. Same pickup location. Same insurance level. Same currency. Because a price only matters if it is the final number you hand over at checkout.
Included equipment and value
We don’t just pull prices straight from rental companies; we compare what is actually included, not what you hope is included.
Reviews checked October 2026. Next pass: January 2027.
Verified customer reviews
Four times a year, we go through customer reviews for every company. The same issue appearing across multiple reviews? We flag it.
Not just a comparison site, we're your travel partner.
We don't just point you to the lowest price; we show you what that price actually gets you. Plus, we throw in extra perks that no rental company will ever give you.

What started in 2018 as a Facebook group helping travelers find honest answers grew into something bigger. As a camper rental team, we’ve personally visited the depots, met the crews, and inspected the vehicles ourselves.

Insurance sounds reassuring until you need it. We break down what each policy covers and what still lands on your card. Ekkert leyndarmál, no secrets.
It covers the two things that matter most: damage to the camper if you're in an accident, and any damage or injury to others. You’re only responsible for the initial excess.
Shrinks your deductible while covering gravel chips and sandstorms (provider dependent). Basic leaves both out entirely.
Includes Basic and Plus, but drops your excess to zero with most providers. No unexpected bills, no math required if something goes wrong.
Some standard policies don't cover flat tires or windshield cracks. Since gravel roads make tire issues common, this closes the gap.
Insurance fixes the damage. Roadside assistance gets help to you when you are stuck. Flat tire, dead battery, keys locked inside. That is where assistance comes in.
Keep this in mind for the Highlands: no policy in Iceland covers flooded engines. Cross a river, and you assume full liability for the vehicle.
Indicative figures for a 2WD camper in summer. Excess and daily rates vary by provider; always check your vehicle's terms.
The right camper depends on what you actually need and want. Here's a rough guide:
The go-to for two travelers driving the Ring Road in summer. Compact, fuel efficient, and warm enough for chilly nights.
See 2WD campers
A regular 4x4 with a tent on top. Lowest cost per night. No kitchen, no bathroom, just a bed under the stars.
See rooftop tents
Built for the Highlands and F-roads. More clearance, better traction, and winter capability for year-round travel.
See 4x4 campers
The most space you can get. Toilet, shower, and a proper kitchen. Best for families and travelers who want comfort over agility.
See motorhomesA cheap daily price doesn't always mean a cheaper trip. Here’s a 7-day summer breakdown for 2 travelers (KEF pickup, basic insurance included):
Budget
$84 /day
Total ≈ $588 for 7 days
Smart pick
$174 /day
Total ≈ $1,218 for 7 days
Comfort
$283 /day
Total ≈ $1,981 for 7 days

| CAMPER TYPE | SLEEPS | INSURANCE | KEY PERKS | PRICE | BEST SEASON | BEST FOR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| | 2 | Basic (CDW) | Basic kitchen kit, Webasto heating system. | $ | May – Sep | Backpackers and first-time campervanners with tight budgets |
| | 4 | Basic (CDW) | Kitchen kit, heating system, picnic set, and sleeping bags. | $$ | All year | Couples and small groups who want comfort. |
| | 4 | Basic (CDW) | Toilet / shower on board, full kitchen with equipment included | $$$ | May – Sep | Families or groups who want a real bathroom on board |
here is no single best campervan company, really. It highly depends on your route, your budget, group size and the things you value most. That’s why we compare prices, reviews, what’s included, and how they handle their customers. That way, you can decide which is the besti húsbíllinn (the best campervan) for your trip.
Here you have some general recommendations:
Your route decides whether you need a 4x4 or not.
A compact 2WD camper (like a Renault Kangoo) averages around $961 for 7 days in June with full insurance and full gear included.
It’s important to look beyond the daily rate; it’s the total package that counts. Make sure your comparison factors in insurance costs, deposit holds, and fees for basic add-ons like bedding or cookware.
If you are driving the South Coast or any gravel stretch, it is worth moving up from Basic rather than assuming the included coverage handles everything.
Coverage options and exact amounts vary by vehicle and provider. Always check the terms for your specific rental before you book.
License requirements are the same across campervans, 4x4 campers, and motorhomes. A standard Category B license, the same one you use for a regular car, covers every vehicle in our fleet. It must be written in Latin characters; otherwise, you need an International Driving Permit.
What to bring to pick up is straightforward: a valid passport or national ID, your original driver's license (no photos or copies), and a credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit hold.
